As LOLC's maiden overseas investment, in 2007 the Group acquired an 18% stake in PRASAC Microfinance Institution in Cambodia and subsequently increased its shareholding to 70%. Over the years, PRASAC grew into the largest microfinance company in Cambodia, with total assets amounting to USD 3.6 Bn as of year end 2020, a matter of pride for the LOLC Group. In FY21 the largest commercial bank in the Republic of Korea, Kookmin Bank, acquired 70% of PRASAC. Currently, LOLC has its presence in microfinance and microinsurance segments through LOLC (Cambodia) Plc. and Serendib Microinsurance Plc.

The company is positioned as Cambodia's largest microfinance institution in terms of the number of clients, and second-largest in terms of gross loan portfolio and deposit balance. It has been one of the fastest-growing MDIs in Cambodia through innovative product development and automation initiatives.

Serendib Microinsurance PLC (Cambodia)

LOLC ventured into the microinsurance space in Cambodia in 2021. The initial products envisaged are loan protection covers for borrowers of microfinance companies in Cambodia, providing a safety net to the borrower’s family members in the event of an unforeseen eventuality. Cambodia’s insurance penetration rate is very low at 1.04% while its middle class is the fastest growing in South East Asia.
